CSAM-SMCA 30th Conference October 25-27, 2018 a huge success!

Our 30th conference was our biggest and best!  Invited speakers, over 100 presenters, 40 poster presentations, 13 exhibitors and close to 700 attendees came together to make this conference our biggest and best ever.  Plenary presentations on the legalization of cannabis, SMART therapy, multidisciplinary teams and the impact of alcohol on indigenous communities were thought-provoking and timely.   The poster session was filled with many discussions of research findings and project ideas.  The many scientific sessions covered numerous topics from treatments to scientific advances and more.

Highlights:

  • Largest conference to date – almost 700 participants registered on all three days.
  • Friday featured a dedicated nursing track.  We hope to host similar tracks to allow other HCP groups to expand their knowledge bases, collaborate and grow.
  • Sessions featured multiple important themes addressing current key issues in ADM – innovative therapies for the opioid epidemic, Indigenous issues, and Sessions of issues specific to youth, women, rural patients and more
  • We arranged tours to 3 different facilities to highlight some of the innovative treatment programs in Vancouver.
  • For the first time ever, we provided four educational bursaries to trainees to attend the conference
  • Many of the abstracts presented as posters or oral presentations will be published in the Canadian Journal of Addiction in upcoming issues.
  • Successful post conference offerings included our largest Fundamentals course ever and the INHSU hepatitis C training course.
  • The Board of Directors met before the conference and is looking to expand our educational and advocacy activities in the future

Thanks to all the attendees for being part of the conference.  We hope you went home with new knowledge, perspectives on addiction care, and a renewed interest in caring for people with addictions.

Special thanks to Karen Mellor and Marilyn Dorizo for their excellent organization of all aspects of the conference.

Thanks also to Christy Sutherland, Patrick McDougall, and Julie Foreman for the organization of our sold-out tours, Dr. Larina Reyes-Smith for the organization of Fundamentals and all our invited speakers and session presenters.
